Page 196: Random Babbling About Other Half

/ Monday, January 14, 2013 /
According to Aristophanes in Plato’s Symposium, in the ancient world of myth there were three types of people. People weren’t just male or female, but one of three types: male/female, male/male, or female/female. In other words, each person was made out of the components of two people. Everyone was happy with this arrangement and never really gave much thought. But then God took a knife and cut everybody in half, right down the middle. So after that the world was divided just into male and female, the upshot being that people spend their time running around trying to locate their missing other half.*

Other myth says that everyone has other six twins in this world. I forgot from which country, but I’m sure I’ve heard about it. Some called them simply doppelgänger, but it’s different actually.

While some people think that those myths came from our ancestors who were trying to give explanation about things surround and our existence, I think it’s also another form of hope that each of us actually has someone who understand and can see through our skins. So here we are, having an idea about soulmate, that maybe, just maybe, that idea can comfort us (a bit) when we’re feeling lonely. When we feel that, we have that specific space waiting to be filled.

But what if that space actually has been there from the first time so we can have a special room to breathe when everything is so messed up? What if that, actually, we don’t need anyone to complete us; because the only one that can make us feel complete is ourselves? Why do we have to put burden to someone whom we consider as our soulmate that they should complete us?

Maybe at the end, a soulmate or other half is someone who can make you realize that from the beginning, you are special and don’t need anyone to complete you. That you will always need your own space every time you need to find peace of mind.

Maybe, just maybe.

Page 138: The Acceptable Myth

Most of the times, I found it much easier to blame your birth sign when it comes to inexplicable feeling or demeanor you have towards some situation. I’ve heard it from some people I know, read it on their tweets or writings. I did it too, couple of times. “Capricorn is blablabla” and I said, “See, I’m a Capricorn, no wonder I did or act like that.”

Justification.
Defense mechanism.
You name it.

Maybe it’s true; your sign define some of your characteristic, the way you react with stimulation from others. The alternative of possibility between sign and personality dynamics is that those earmarks of signs that have been published for thousands years give impact unconsciously on a person through materials that they’ve heard or read. Media, especially those whose audience target are teenagers usually provide a column that “reports” predictions of what will happen in your life based on your sign. They called it “horoscope”. A printed oracle. It’s a natural thing for human to try to blend with community, so when they read about sign characteristic, they go with “oh, I’m a Libra, and they say that a Libra usually do this and that. Act like this and that. Etc,” and they try to fulfill the standard, the path, whether they‘re realizing it or not.

So let’s do some small unscientific research here.

They say Capricorn is:

Introvert . Tend to be Loner
>> Sometimes, too much gathering and party ‘suffocates’ me. When I need to be alone, I really can avoid anyone I know. That’s why sometimes I enjoy go to a place filled with unfamiliar faces. Or lock myself in my room all day long. I know I should do that less.

Prudent. Patient. Careful. Humorous, Tough. Stubborn/ Unyielding. Stable. Serious. Independent. Unemotional. Shrewd. Responsible. Cautious.
>> I take this as compliment.

Ambitious
>> I consider myself as a hard worker, not ambitious. Ambitious IMO is trying to consciously advancing your level in such competitive way; while hard worker type is more focus on do the best on their works.

“There is also a tendency to pessimism, melancholy and even unhappiness which many Capricorn are unable to keep to themselves, especially if they fail personally. In the extreme this trait can make them a very depressed individual; ecstatic happiness alternating with the most wretched kind of misery which is so subconsciously buried that he or she should seek help if such emotions become frequent. “
>> Man, are we really that disturbed?

"The swings in mood are not the only reason some Capricorns deserve the adjective based on their name - capricious. They can be surprisingly and suddenly witty and subtle for the quiet, reserved individuals they seem to be, and they also have a tendency to ruin things by unexpected and utterly irresponsible bouts of flippancy."
>> Sometimes, just sometimes

"They think profoundly and deeply, through exploring all possibilities before deciding on a 'safe' alternative. They have good memories and an insatiable yet methodical desire for knowledge. They are rational, logical and clearheaded, have good concentration, delight in debate in which they can show off their cleverness by luring their adversaries into traps and confounding them with logic."
>> I like this description. :D

Their occupations can include most professions that have to do with math or money and they are strongly attracted to music.
>> Music, yes. Math and money, hmmm… kinda bad with numbers.

It’s kind of funny when modern society still see it as “acceptable” myth while on the other hand, they also try to classify information from other fields (such as health or science); which one is fact, and which one is myth.

Maybe my mind had corrupted with materials I’ve read since I was a kid about Capricorn thing and shaped me the way I am now. Or maybe it's just a coincidence. Ah well.

If you can't find a unicorn...
fold one
;)

Unicorn is a solitary mythical creature. Some say it symbolizes hope and dreams. So i folded it few days ago to remind myself that i can "fold" and build my dreams. That at least, i should give it a shot first :D

I love fairy tale.
No, not because of typical plot of poor-weak-beautiful-princess-meet-gorgeous-brave-powerful-handsome-prince and then they got married and live happily ever after.  It’s more because it's full of fantasy and myth creatures. When I was a teenager, I regularly watched Hercules and Xena TV series. I also like White Snake Legend, Sun Go Kong, and Mahabarata. Maybe because when I was little, my grandma loved “pewayangan” so much and a big fan of Mahabarata TV series. She used to ask me to accompany her watching it. *Oh, I miss you.. How’s everything going “up” there? :)  * This kinda passion for myth stuff had helped me to achieve a nice grade in history study at school. It’s been so easy for me to enjoy and memorized the story about life in pre-historic era, the belief that spread among people about their god and goddess, along with its mythology.

Anyway, these are my favorite mythical creatures:

Unicorn
“The Unicorn is a lonely, solitary creature that symbolizes hope” – from Ally McBeal :)

Pegasus

 Phoenix

Fairy

In Pan’s Labyrinth, fairy can change their form into something different, depends on who sees them. So if you don’t believe that they exist, you can never see their true shape.

Hippogriff

Mokona Apapa

Ok, this one isn’t mythical creature, it’s from Manga titled Magic Knight Rayearth. But it’s sooo cuuuuutteeee.. ^^

I found this site about mythical creatures. It’s weird yet amusing. Hahaha.

So what’s your favorite mythical creatures?
